During well maintenance operations, one of the most labor-intensive tasks for workers is to connect or disconnect (thread or unthread) oil pipes and drill pipes. Traditionally, this task was performed using pipe wrenches or chain tongs, which not only required significant physical effort but also posed safety risks. The hydraulic power tongs are mechanical tools operated by the power from a workover rig, designed specifically for threading and unthreading operations. They can handle drill strings and tubing sizes ∅50 mm (1.99"), ∅60 mm (23/8"), ∅73 mm (27/8"), ∅89 mm (31/2"), ∅95 mm (33/4"), ∅108 mm (41/4"), ∅114 mm (41/2"), Ø120 mm (4.3/4"). They significantly reduce the physical strain on workers and help prevent or minimize accidents. Additionally, hydraulic power tongs increase the torque applied to the threads of pipes and drill pipes, reducing the likelihood of thread disengagement incidents.
The working principle of hydraulic power tongs involves transferring the power from the workover rig to the hydraulic motor of the tongs via a stroke reducer. The hydraulic motor then undergoes either single-stage or dual-stage deceleration, causing the open gear on the tong head to rotate. This rotation generates two different speeds, thereby rotating the pipe (or drill pipe). When the open gear rotates, the intermediate rack remains stationary due to the braking effect of the brake hammer, creating relative motion between the open gear and the jaw frame. As a result, the two rollers on the jaw climb the inclined plate, forcing the jaws on the crossbeam to move towards the center of the pipe (or drill pipe), eventually gripping it tightly. Once the pipe (or drill pipe) is securely held, it rotates along with the open gear.
